You have three proposals on your desk. All of them promise page one of Google, and all of them sound confident. Not sure how to choose a digital marketing agency in Nairobi when you can’t see the results in advance? The answer is to test them before you sign, and this guide shows you how.
The Short Version
- Pick an agency that understands Kenyan customers, not just global templates.
- Check that it is a real, registered business that can show real results.
- Walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings or hides how they report.
How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Nairobi: 5 Checks
1. They understand the Kenyan market. Kenyan customers are mobile-first, active on WhatsApp and used to paying with M-Pesa. An agency that copies global playbooks will miss how people here discover and trust brands. Ask for examples of work for local audiences, including content in Kiswahili or mixed language where it fits.
2. They cover more than one service. Channels work better together: SEO brings people to your content, social media builds attention and ads speed it up. Look for a team that can handle social media marketing, SEO, media buying and PR under one plan.
3. They show real case studies. Ask for campaign numbers, ranking changes and lead results, not just testimonials. Our own case studies show how we present this evidence, and any good agency should be able to do the same.
4. They are a real, registered business. You can check whether a company or business name is registered through Kenya’s Business Registration Service. Also look for a physical office, named team members and a contract that spells out the work.
5. They report clearly. Before you sign, ask which numbers they track, how often you get reports and what progress should look like at 30, 60 and 90 days.

5 Questions to Ask Before You Sign
Who will manage my account day to day? Many agencies pitch with senior staff and hand the work to juniors. Ask who you will actually talk to.
How do you report, and can I see a sample? A real report shows data and next steps, not vague updates.
What does success look like for my business? A generic answer means they are thinking about their retainer, not your goals.
Have you worked in my industry? Sector experience means less time learning on your budget.
What happens if results fall short? A serious agency has a clear process for reviewing and adjusting, without blaming you.
Red Flags to Walk Away From
- Guaranteed rankings. Google’s own guidance for hiring an SEO advises you to find someone else if they promise first place in search results.
- Cold emails out of the blue. The same guidance warns about agencies that contact you unprompted.
- Asking for full control on day one. For an audit, Google advises granting only read access to your Search Console at first.
- Vague reports or no contract. If they can’t explain what you are paying for, don’t pay.
- Pressure to sign today. A good agency lets you compare proposals.
Agency, Freelancer or In-House?
- Agency: a team with different skills, and a good fit when you need several channels together.
- Freelancer: often cheaper for one task, but you depend on one person’s time.
- In-house: a dedicated person who knows your business, but you carry the salary and may still need outside help for specialist work.
What Does It Cost?
Agencies usually charge a monthly retainer, a fixed project fee or a mix, and ad spend is normally separate from the agency fee. Ask exactly what is included and what is billed on top. You can see how we structure packages on our pricing page.
